Chen Shiya, Executive Editor of Global Screen:

Nowadays, it is rare to see a classic and neat but not boring biographical film of the times. From Churchill’s more than 30-day experience of being elected as the British Prime Minister at the darkest moment of human destiny, he not only excavated the historical past that most audiences were unfamiliar with, but also told a gripping story about the dispute between the "main battle" and the "main peace" of British politicians with a narrative full of suspense. Gary Oldman, one of the most outstanding acting actors in the world today, under the realistic special effects makeup, vividly interprets Churchill’s courage and charm as a leader at the critical moment of life and death by listening to his voice but superb performance, which can be said to hold up most of the highlights of the film, and the Oscar for Best Actor is just around the corner.

Sai ren film critic:

The slightly colorful passage, which is also the most naive part of the whole film, is that Churchill shared hatred with the people in the subway. How much public opinion can lubricate the war machine is a big topic worth discussing. The film takes an evasive attitude towards the word profound. Fundamentally speaking, this is a very dry film.

Zhou Liming film critic:

It can be called a companion piece of Dunkirk, and it is also a superb profile piece (not necessarily a biography, because it only focuses on a short period). The texture of the film resembles antique furniture, which is deep and full of internal force. The biggest highlight is Gary Oldman’s performance, which is simply Churchill’s soul. Every cell is a play.

Zeng Nianqun, Executive Editor of Youth Film Handbook:

Although it is an Oscar-style biographical film, the film technique is retro and not fashionable enough, but it still successfully creates a great leader who runs counter to his colleagues in the establishment school and finds strength among the civilians. Film editing, directing, acting and other aspects have played a higher level, and it is a film that infects the audience as a whole.

Huang Zhuo Sina Entertainment Film Group Leader:

Churchill’s monologue can also be regarded as a "prequel" to Dunkirk. In the face of the national crisis, the consultation and operation within the regime is the best place for this film. Gary Oldman’s interpretation of Churchill deserves an Oscar statuette.

Editor-in-Chief of A Lang Movie Magazine:

At the beginning of the film, Chamberlain, who advocated appeasement policy, was kicked off the historical stage, and at the end, Churchill’s famous speech, "We will fight to the end, we will fight in France, we will fight in the ocean, and we will fight in the air with increasing determination and strength … …” The structure has achieved a perfect closed loop, and the atmosphere is the same, but the mental state is completely different.

This is a classical film, which strictly abides by the three principles of the play from its structure to its emotional ups and downs. Therefore, many people will think that this is a particularly well-behaved film, far from the escape of contemporary movies.

But this is a very, very exquisite movie.

In terms of photography, the secret words of the film were strictly observed. In addition to the dark suit, there are dim lights in the corridor and the shadow of sunshine in the office. Churchill’s bedroom was also covered by thick curtains, and the occasional outdoor play was also gloomy and rainy. This is the climate characteristics of Britain, and it is also a portrayal of the mood of the characters in the play, and it is also the presentation of the atmosphere of public opinion and the lingering sense of oppression at that time.

Gary Oldman’s performance, praised by countless people, deserves such great praise. His best performance is not the burst of strength, but the details, such as the eyes looking up from the frame, splashing saliva, vague pronunciation and wheezing. This is his tough truth and the reason why he changed history.

Gary Oldman’s performance didn’t show how tough and fearless this hero was at a critical moment in history. What he showed was Churchill’s weakness, fear, hesitation and irritability. The great move he made was to repeatedly deny the decision he had to make after struggling. He defeated himself and was defeated by all mankind.

Yabo gun draft

The Darkest Hour is a biographical film adapted from a real event, which is loved by the Oscar judges. Churchill led the audience into the critical moment of World War II in do or die, and reproduced the decision made by Churchill and the whole UK to change the world. Gary Oldman plays Churchill, who is far from his own image, by means of special effects makeup. What he pursues is the restoration of spiritual temperament, which is undoubtedly the highlight moment of Odeman’s performance career.

Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Content Department of Laoyang Time Network:

It’s not just a joke to call The Dark Hour a prequel to Dunkirk. There is a wonderful connection between them. "Dunkirk" focuses on describing the psychological reaction of soldiers and people at major historical juncture, while this film focuses on showing the decision-making background of leaders at major juncture.

Gary Oldman’s interpretation of Churchill is vivid. There is no need to repeat his wonderful acting skills, but the performance of director joe wright is amazing. The plot is concentrated in the timeline of several months, and the beautiful lens language and smooth editing rhythm connect many characters and events in series. Churchill’s contact with the masses in the subway is similar to a stroke of genius. It may be a bold imagination to promote the plot, and it also gives an answer to the difficult problem of "whether the course of history is the decision of great men or the influence of popular will".

Editor-in-Chief of Xiaotuo Iqiyi Film Channel:

A neat, academic, classicism biographical film, which seems to be tailor-made for the Oscar, is a perfect match. Together with Dunkirk, it has become the two sides of the story of World War II. Photography and performance are the highlights. Gary Oldman’s performance has the aura of locking in the best actor in this Oscar in advance.

Red fish film critic:

If "Dunkirk" shows the audience the life and death of hundreds of thousands of young people on the vast beach where the sea and the sky meet, then "The Dark Hour" is in a cramped indoor space, which gives us a glimpse of the survival of the whole free Europe decades ago.

Director joe wright still keeps the narrative style of "Pride and Prejudice" and "Atonement" in which the undercurrent is hidden under the stagnant water waves, and strives to truly restore history, but also creates real little faces with the lens, as if to explain to us that the power to change a country’s destiny can only come from the people forever.

Gary Oldman, a British actor, gave a cutting-hair-washing-pulp-like acting skill this time. Although the level of special effects and makeup is amazing, it really makes us believe that this face on the screen is Churchill’s, but it is still a soul that he described with his eyes and body language that is sometimes firm, sometimes fragile, sometimes sly and sometimes tired, and that is as ordinary as each of us, but it is extremely great.

Cui Ting Film Critics:

Gary Oldman’s performance is textbook-level, and the film is completely supported by his performance. How can a British prime minister stick to himself when he is facing an incomparably powerful German army and dealing with the Dunkirk retreat and internal and external difficulties? The film emphasizes faith and courage, and the performance is superb, almost locking in this year’s Oscar for best actor.

Gary Oldman belongs to the kind of actor who sinks down to acting, even a small role can shine. This time he plays Churchill. Odeman is very thin, so he needs special effects makeup to play the burly Churchill, wearing a silicone mask and getting fat. Just like in Andy Lau’s Slimming Men and Women, the thin man becomes fat. However, the present makeup technology is so exquisite that it is difficult to see that Churchill is a standard actor without debunking it. Therefore, in the Oscar Awards in 2018, the Best Makeup Award of Dark Hour may not have run away.

International Senior Editor of China Film Report by Qi Zheng;

The Dark Hour keeps the pride of academic films, which can be impeccable in photography, soundtrack and editing, and is also just right in artistic processing. It does not destroy the film’s heavy sense of history, but injects the surging expressive force of film art into the film, allowing the audience to be in the dark hour and find the light of victory here. The excellent overall control of the film didn’t make Gary Oldman play a one-man show. If this film is an exquisite afternoon tea cake of the British royal family, Gary Oldman’s performance is the gorgeous cherry embellished on it.
